A typical 200-room hotel
will go through roughly
12,000 plastic keys per
year as desk clerks code
2 to 4 keys per room and
guests lose or take the
majority of them back
home with them. That
means many
non-biodegradable key
cards wind up in
landfills each year.
Multiplying this factor
across the landscape of
American hotels, over
1,300 tons of plastic
become waste each year
in the United States
alone. To visualize this
degree of
non-biodegradable waste
imagine eight 777
airplanes being dumped
in that landfill each
year. The environmental
impact becomes even more
magnified when you add
to that the millions of
other discarded cards,
like gift and membership
cards.
